Cardiovascular Disease: The TRUTH

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for Americans.

Ask 100 people the cause of heart disease and most will say genetics.

Although genetics will make you more susceptible to heart disease it is NOT the cause.

Others might say things like diet and smoking and although these are partially correct, the reason people think they cause heart disease is usually wrong.

The TRUTH is that the cause of heart disease all comes back to STRESS! Physical stress (not moving your body properly), chemical stress (smoking and eating a poor diet) and the biggest STRESSOR of all that is the main cause of heart disease, emotional stress!

Did you read that right? Yes you did. Emotional stress is the main cause of heart disease. Have you ever heard the term stress kills? It is true!

When you are confronted with a stressful situation your brain views it as danger and begins to tell your body to respond to it. This response includes the release of chemicals to produce something called platelets in the blood. These platelets are designed to make your blood sticky so if for example, you get cut in a dangerous stressful situation your blood will be better able to coagulate so you won’t bleed to death. In addition these stressful situations create inflammation in the body including your blood vessels. When the stressful situation passes then everything returns to normal.

Unfortunately in many cases, especially today, these stressful situations do not pass. This chronic stress prevents the brain from communicating properly with the body. Specifically, the prefrontal cortex has a hard time determining what in your life is actually dangerous and not dangerous.

For example work stress or money stress is now viewed as dangerous. This then leads to more chronic stress and more sticky platelets being produced and more inflammation. As these platelets travel around they don’t know what to do so they begin to stick to the artery walls. In addition, your brain starts to develop a pattern that leads to constriction of the arteries which places more stress on the heart, leads to high blood pressure, and increases your risk of stroke.

So, what’s the solution? Breaking the stress pattern habit that your brain has developed.

How do you break that pattern? With a chiropractic adjustment!

Chiropractic adjustments have been shown in research to positively affect the prefrontal cortex of the brain causing a pattern interrupt. This allows a new pattern to be formed and restores proper physiological function. It also helps to normalize blood pressure, reduce arterial wall plaque build up, reduce stroke risk and so much more.

The key is to manage stress and respond to it in healthy ways.
