Excessive Screen Time and Your Health.
Average Daily Time Spent On Digital Devices:
· Adults – 3 hours and 43 minutes a day
· 8-12 year old’s – 4 hours and 40 minutes a day
· Teens – 7 hours and 22 minutes a day not including time spent on homework.
The position of your head coupled with the blue screen time while on digital devices places stress on your brain but also the brain stem/spinal cord and muscles and joints of the neck. This leads not only to neck/back pain and headaches but can also lead to brain health issues. We call this Digital Brain Fog.
A study in the Journal of American Medical Association found that children ages 3-5 who had 1 or more hours of screen time a day exhibited lower brain development particularly in the area of white brain matter.
A 2018 study out of China concluded that too much screen time increases neck pain along with anxiety and depression symptoms.
Another study in Abnormal Psychology reported over the last decade the number of youths with mental health disorders has more than doubled: Major depression increased 52% from 2005 to 2017 which is being attributed to too much screen time.
What Can You Do:
1) Limit screen time especially in children and teens who are most susceptible.
2) While on your device, position it so that your head stays in an upright neutral position looking straight ahead to decrease the effects of an abnormal posture for long periods of time.
3) Get adjusted regularly.
Research shows that chiropractic adjustments can correct postural distortions and also reduce stress on the brain and nervous system. It also shows that chiropractic adjustments have a positive effect on the area of the brain called the prefrontal cortex which can help override the damaging effects of digital brain fog.
