Itβs back to school time so this week we are going to focus on backpack safety. π©βπ«ππ«
Many kids are carrying around backpacks that are too heavy and/or donβt fit them properly.
This not only causes postural distortions but also places additional stress on the brain and nervous system that lead to numerous health issues.
βRoger Sperry, Ph.D. (Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1981) discovered that 90% of the brain’s activity is used to balance your body within the gravitational field of earth. If your body is mechanically distorted, it will affect the other 10% of the brain’s activity, which controls all the other body functions such as breathing, digestion and cognition. 90% of the stimulation and nutrition to the brain is generated by the movement of the spineβ. Postural distortions can lead to things such as:
βͺοΈCompromised immune function
βͺοΈDigestion issues
βͺοΈImpaired circulation, which makes your heart have to work harder
to do its job
βͺοΈReduced respiratory function
βͺοΈReduced oxygen going to your tissues
βͺοΈIntestinal problems
βͺοΈPain, disc herniations, pinched nerves and eventually arthritis
βͺοΈNegative emotions such as unhappiness, less confidence and
pessimism
Consider the followingβ¦
Carrying 12 pounds in a backpack and lifting the backpack 10 times/day equals 120 pounds lifted per day
During the course of a school year that equals 21,600 pounds
NEARLY 11 TONS equivalent to 6 full sized cars! This can cause numerous issues. π±
Be sure to get your child adjusted regularly. Chiropractic adjustments will help restore proper function of the spine reducing the added stress on the nervous system that carrying backpacks can cause. πͺ
